Connectivity

Remote
Direct
How do you want to interface your PC to the controller hardware?

If your PC sets within a few feet of where the controller box will reside we recommend you go "Direct", otherwise choose "Remote"

In "Remote", the wiring in your home or facility is used as the transmission medium. Ideally, the wall outlet near your computer needs to be serviced by the same electrical phase that services the controller hardware. If that is not the case, you can still use this method, but will need to acquire a "phase coupler" sold by other parties. Please call us if this is the case.

The "Direct" method requires direct cabling between the controller and your PC. LVE recommends that you use this option if you can locate your PC within close proximity (15 to 20 ft) of the controller electronics. The controller electronics supplier specifies the distance between the controller hardware and your PC can be as long as 1000'. You could wire a direct connect from the controller, throughout your home or facility, eventually connecting to a remote PC. LVE recommends the "Remote" option over this scenario.

PC RS-232

Yes
No

Do you have an RS-232 port on your PC that can be dedicated to this system?

Example of an RS-232 port(s) on a tower PC The RS-232 hardware connector(s), if present, is located on the back of your PC. Typically it is near the printer port. The white arrows on the image, below left, point to two RS-232 connectors on the back of a tower PC.

Laptop RS-232 Port Illustration The RS-232 port is identified as having 9-male pins enclosed within a female housing. A more detailed picture of this connector is indicated in the image at right. The connector of interest is to the left of the 25-pin printer port(female sockets / male housing).

Look closely sometimes the VGA or SVGA monitor connectors have a simliar appearance, but will have 15 or more male pins.

Some older PC's might have a 25-pin connector (male pins/female housing). Our hardware ships with a 9-pin connector only. If you have the 25 pin connector, you will need to acquire a 25 pin to 9 pin male adapter.
